Washer not spinning: what to check and what it usually is
A washer that will not spin is often not broken at all. It may be off balance, unable to drain, or waiting on a lid it thinks is open. When it is a part, it is usually one of a handful. Here is how to tell the difference.

The process
What you can safely check first
- Rebalance the load
Modern washers check the balance before spinning and will refuse to spin or keep trying if the load is lopsided. A single heavy item like a bath mat, comforter or a few soaked towels is the usual culprit. Redistribute the load, or split it, and run a drain and spin.
- Make sure it drained
A washer will not spin with water still in the tub. If the water is still there after the cycle, the problem is draining, not spinning. Check the drain hose is not kinked behind the machine or pushed too far down into the standpipe.
- Unplug it, then clean the drain pump filter
On most front-loaders there is a small access door at the bottom front. Unplug the washer, put down towels and a shallow pan, and slowly unscrew the filter; expect water. Coins, hair ties, socks and lint are the usual finds. Some top-loaders have one too; check the manual.
- Check the lid or door closes firmly
The washer will not spin unless the lid or door lock tells the control it is closed. Make sure nothing is caught in the door and that a top-load lid closes fully.
- Cut back on detergent
Too much soap, or regular detergent in a high-efficiency machine, makes so much suds that the washer cannot spin properly and may stop or add rinses. Use HE detergent at the dose on the cap and run an empty rinse to clear it.
- Reset it
Unplug the washer for a few minutes, plug it back in and try a drain and spin cycle on its own. Note any error code shown on the display.
The usual causes, most common first
Unbalanced or overloaded drum. The washer spins up, stops, tries again, and finishes with wet clothes. Nothing is broken; the machine is protecting itself. If this happens with normal loads, the suspension (shocks, dampers or suspension rods) may be worn and letting the tub move too much.
Drain problem. Clogged pump filter, a blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. Water stays in the tub and the washer will not spin. A pump that hums but moves no water is usually jammed with debris; one that makes no sound at all may have failed.
Lid switch or door lock. On a top-loader, the lid switch tells the control the lid is shut; when it fails, the washer fills and agitates but never spins. On a front-loader, a door lock that will not lock, or will not report that it is locked, stops the cycle before spin, often with an error code and a clicking from the door.
Drive belt. On belt-driven washers, including many front-loaders and older top-loaders, a worn, stretched or broken drive belt means the motor runs but the drum does not turn, or turns slowly. A burning rubber smell during spin is a common sign; if you smell burning, stop the washer and unplug it.
Motor coupler. On older direct-drive top-loaders, a plastic and rubber coupler connects the motor to the transmission. It is designed to break to protect the motor if the washer is overloaded. The motor hums, but the tub neither agitates nor spins.
Clutch or shifter. On many top-loaders, the shifter switches between agitate and spin, and the clutch brings the basket up to speed. A failed shifter shows up as a washer that agitates but will not spin, often with an error code. A worn clutch spins slowly and leaves clothes too wet.
Motor, motor control or main board. Less common. The washer does not spin at all, or does nothing at spin time, with no mechanical cause found. These need electrical testing.

When to call a technician
Call us when:
- The load is balanced, the tub drains, the lid or door is shut, and it still will not spin.
- The drain pump hums or is silent and the filter is clear.
- You hear grinding, loud banging during spin, or the tub has visibly dropped or tilts.
- You smell burning rubber or see smoke. Stop the cycle and unplug the washer first.
- Water is leaking onto the floor. Stop running it; a small leak under a washer becomes a subfloor repair.
- The same error code comes back after a reset.
If you see sparks, smell an electrical burning smell, or get a shock from the washer, unplug it if you can do so safely, or turn it off at the breaker, and leave it off.

Questions
Washer questions
Why does my washer fill and agitate but not spin?
On a top-loader, the usual causes are a failed lid switch, a broken motor coupler, a failed shifter, or water that has not drained. On a front-loader, it is most often a door lock problem, a clogged drain pump filter, or an unbalanced load.
Why are my clothes still soaking wet after the cycle?
The washer either could not drain or could not reach full spin speed. Check for an unbalanced load, a clogged pump filter and oversudsing first. If those are fine, a worn belt, clutch or suspension is likely.
How do I force my washer to drain and spin?
Select the drain and spin (or spin only) cycle and start it with the lid or door closed. If it still will not spin and water stays in the tub, the drain side is the problem. Do not try to bypass the lid switch or door lock; they stop the drum spinning while you can reach into it.
Is a washer that will not spin worth fixing?
Usually. Belts, couplers, lid switches, door locks and drain pumps are common repairs. A failed transmission or a seized tub bearing on an older machine may not be, and we tell you that after the diagnosis.
